Energy Security
Energy security in the Netherlands can no longer be taken for granted due to geopolitical developments, the closure of the Groningen gas field and growing dependence on energy imports. This requires both short-term action and a long-term vision. As the Netherlands’ public energy company, EBN is working towards an energy system in which energy remains available, affordable and increasingly sustainable.
Energy security means ensuring a sufficient, reliable and affordable supply of energy for households and businesses, both today and in the future. It also requires an energy system that is resilient to disruptions and fluctuations in energy supply. This calls for flexibility, resilience and the ability to respond effectively to unexpected situations.
Due to geopolitical developments, such as the war in Ukraine, and the transition to alternative energy sources, energy markets have become less predictable than in the past. At the same time, the Netherlands is producing less energy domestically, increasing its dependence on international energy supplies, while overall energy demand remains high. Although the share of renewable energy continues to grow, it is not yet sufficient to fully meet current energy demand.
EBN works every day on solutions to safeguard energy security, both now and in the future. We do this through a range of activities aimed at strengthening the resilience, affordability and sustainability of the Dutch energy system.

Reliable Gas System
Natural gas will remain necessary for the foreseeable future to help keep the energy system stable during the energy transition. That is why EBN contributes to a reliable and sustainable gas system. By continuing Dutch natural gas production responsibly, particularly in the North Sea, we help reduce dependence on imported gas. In addition, EBN’s gas sales activities contribute to maintaining sufficient natural gas supplies within the system.
Energy Storage
Energy storage plays a crucial role in balancing fluctuations in energy supply and demand. Gas storage facilities help ensure that energy is available when demand is high, for example during cold winter periods. EBN is actively involved in filling the gas storage facilities at Alkmaar, Bergermeer, Norg and Grijpskerk.
These gas storage facilities help ensure that sufficient natural gas remains available, even when markets are under pressure and demand is high. In addition to natural gas storage, EBN is also working on high-temperature heat storage (HT-ATES) and the development of hydrogen storage facilities.
Energy security facilities and projects are located throughout the Netherlands, including sites for storing heat, hydrogen, and natural gas, as well as biomethane initiatives. These initiatives help balance energy supply and demand and contribute to a reliable energy system.
New Energy Solutions
As part of its efforts to strengthen energy security, EBN sees hydrogen and biomethane as important building blocks of the future energy system. Hydrogen can be used to store and transport energy, while biomethane provides a sustainable alternative to natural gas. That is why EBN is involved in projects such as PosHYdon and North Star GZI.
In addition, EBN is committed to accelerating the heat transition, helping to create a more sustainable and resilient energy system for the Netherlands.
