Peak Gas Installation Alkmaar

Peak Gas Installation Alkmaar, together with gas storage facilities in Norg, Grijpskerk and Bergermeer, contributes to the energy security of our country. As a peak gas installation (PGI), Alkmaar Gas Storage contributes to the energy security of the Netherlands by quickly making additional natural gas available at times of high demand.

Whereas seasonal storage facilities are mainly designed to store gas for longer periods, a peak gas installation is designed to deliver large quantities of natural gas to the transmission network in a short time. PGI Alkmaar therefore helps absorb peaks in demand during cold periods or other situations in which additional capacity is needed. With the introduction of the Energy Supply Crisis Prevention Act (Wbe), expected in early 2028, PGI Alkmaar will serve as an emergency reserve.

The peak gas installation near Alkmaar has been in operation since 1997. Within the Dutch energy system, the storage facility fulfils a specific function because it can respond quickly to changes in natural gas demand. This makes the installation an important link within the Dutch gas infrastructure. PGI Alkmaar has a storage volume of approximately 5 TWh and a delivery capacity of around 15 GW. Despite its relatively limited volume, the storage facility is of great value because of its high delivery speed.

Pursuant to Article 82 of the Mining Act, EBN participates in these activities on behalf of the Dutch State with a 40% interest, in the interest of “efficient exploration and production, systematic management and optimal sales of hydrocarbons”. A standard cooperation agreement has been concluded for this purpose between EBN and the licence holder. This storage facility is operated by TAQA Energy.
