PosHYdon

The PosHYdon pilot project is generating valuable insights into the offshore production of green hydrogen. PosHYdon integrates three energy systems in the North Sea: offshore wind, offshore natural gas and offshore hydrogen. The project is being carried out on Neptune Energy’s Q13a-A located approximately 13 kilometres off the coast of Scheveningen.

To produce green hydrogen, seawater is first converted into demineralised water on the platform. This water is then converted into hydrogen through electrolysis. The electricity required for this process is supplied by offshore wind power, enabling the production of green hydrogen. The purpose of the pilot is to gain practical experience in integrating operational energy systems offshore and producing hydrogen in a marine environment. In particular, the project investigates the impact of offshore conditions, including exposure to salt, on the performance of the electrolyser. The platform used is a producing platform, which is the first fully electrified platform in the Dutch North Sea powered by renewable electricity.

The lessons learned from PosHYdon are intended to support the next steps towards large-scale offshore green hydrogen production. The green hydrogen produced during the pilot is blended with natural gas and transported to shore through the existing offshore gas pipeline infrastructure.
