Grijpskerk Gas Storage
Grijpskerk Gas Storage, together with gas storage facilities in Alkmaar, Norg and Bergermeer, contributes to the energy security of our country. By storing natural gas and making it available when demand increases, the storage facility helps absorb peaks in gas consumption.
The storage facility is located in the area between Grijpskerk, Niezijl and Kommerzijl in the province of Groningen. After an underground structure suitable for natural gas storage was found in the area, a large-scale storage site was developed. The complex was commissioned in 1997 as a national storage site for natural gas.
Grijpskerk has a storage volume of approximately 24 TWh and a delivery capacity of around 26 GW. This makes the storage facility an important part of the Dutch gas infrastructure.
Pursuant to Article 82 of the Mining Act, EBN participates in these activities on behalf of the Dutch State with a 40% interest, in the interest of “efficient exploration and production, systematic management and optimal sales of hydrocarbons”. A standard cooperation agreement has been concluded for this purpose between EBN and the licence holder. The Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) operates the storage facility.
A complete overview of all our hydrocarbon activities can be found on our page about hydrocarbon partnerships. On our energy storage pages, you can find more general information about energy storage and the role of EBN.
