Warmtenet Zuid-Limburg

This project is being developed by the National Heat Investor (Nationale Deelneming Warmte – NDW, currently operating under Energie Beheer Nederland), in collaboration with various public sector partners.

Over the past period, ten municipalities in South Limburg, the Province of Limburg, Enpuls Warmte Infra (Enexis Group) and NDW have explored how a public district heating network can be realised in South Limburg. The aim was to provide affordable fossil gas-free heating to tens of thousands of buildings in South Limburg through the use of residual heat from companies located at the Chemelot industrial park.

Phase 3 of Warmtenet Zuid-Limburg has been completed. The study generated valuable knowledge, insights and experience. At the same time, it became clear that the heat sources and the financial plan require additional attention. Therefore, the next phase will take a broader approach by considering a combination of heat sources, such as residual heat, heat from former mine galleries and collective heat pumps. The development of district heating networks in South Limburg will continue through an adapted, area-based approach. South Limburg will be divided into three clusters (areas): Maastricht/Meerssen, Parkstad and the Westelijke Mijnstreek. For each cluster, it will be examined which collective heating solutions best match the local situation, opportunities and heat demand.

Behind the scenes, several involved parties, including NDW, are working on a follow-up approach. On our district heating pages, you can find more general information about collective heat systems, district heating networks in the Netherlands and the role of the National Heat Investor – NDW.
