Warmtebedrijf Drenthe-Overijssel

This project is being developed by the National Heat Investor (Nationale Deelneming Warmte – NDW), currently operating under Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), in collaboration with various public sector partners.

Many municipalities in Drenthe and Overijssel lack the expertise, capacity and resources to establish local heat companies or develop district heating networks independently. The partners are therefore exploring whether a regional heat company can address this gap.

This new district heating company named Warmtebedrijf Drenthe-Overijssel would reduce fragmentation, strengthen public-sector governance and pool expertise on district heating at a scale that individual municipalities cannot achieve. The partners regard district heating as strategically important both to the energy transition and to reducing CO₂ emissions and dependence on fossil natural gas.

Warmtebedrijf Drenthe-Overijssel is expected to be established in 2027.
