Porthos
Porthos is a partnership between the Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) focused on the transport and permanent storage of CO₂ in the Rotterdam port area.
The initiative ensures that captured CO₂ from industrial companies is not released into the atmosphere, but safely stored in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. In this way, Porthos makes an important contribution to achieving the Dutch climate targets.
As part of the project, CO₂ captured by Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil and Shell will be transported through dedicated underground CO₂ infrastructure to the P18 gas fields beneath the North Sea. Around 2.5 megatonnes of CO₂ are expected to be stored there permanently each year for a period of fifteen years.
Construction of the Porthos system is now well under way. Both the onshore and offshore infrastructure, as well as the offshore installations, are at an advanced stage. Once the system is operational, the connected companies will deliver their CO₂ through a collection pipeline of more than 30 kilometres through the Rotterdam port area. At a compressor station, the CO₂ will be brought to the right pressure and then transported through a subsea pipeline to a platform approximately 20 kilometres off the coast. From the platform, the CO₂ will be injected into depleted gas fields, three to four kilometres beneath the North Sea seabed.
