Summary of main characteristics of the depleted gas fields in the Netherlands that could be candidates for UHS

As part of the GroenVermogenNL project HyTROS, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) is participating in a study to explore the possibilities for underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in depleted gas fields in the Netherlands, with the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Within this study, EBN, together with TU Delft, publishes this report on the geological and reservoir-technical characterization of gas fields for UHS, based on publicly available data.

The report focuses on gas fields near the industrial clusters in North and South Holland, because the demand for large-scale underground hydrogen storage is expected to arise there first and because salt caverns cannot be developed in that area. This field characterization is an important foundation for the further development of UHS in the demonstration project that should be operational around 2030, as well as in subsequent commercial projects.
