Gas Trading
Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) has operated for more than 50 years as an investor and knowledge partner in Dutch energy projects. In recent years, EBN has also taken on new, more operational roles, including involvement in SCAN and CO2 transport and storage projects. Since the beginning of 2025, the public energy company has been given an additional responsibility: independently marketing and selling natural gas, primarily from small gas fields in the Netherlands, and acting on behalf of the Dutch government as the “storage filling agent” for the country’s gas storage facilities.
EBN began selling its own natural gas in early 2025. This concerns EBN’s share of gas production from the so-called Small Fields, which is typically 40%. Previously, this gas was marketed by gas trading company GasTerra. Following the closure of the Groningen gas field, GasTerra’s activities will come to an end in late 2026. In early October 2026, GasTerra sold the last volumes of “EBN gas”, after which EBN assumed full responsibility for trading its gas portfolio.
All gas purchasing and sales activities are managed from EBN’s office in Utrecht, where a dedicated trading organisation has been established. This trading organisation is also responsible for filling the Dutch gas storage facilities, if and when instructed to do so by the Dutch government.

Gas Trading for Energy Security
To carry out its new responsibilities as a gas sales organisation and storage filling agent, EBN had to build significant new capabilities. This included establishing a new department, implementing new IT systems, developing new procedures, and assembling a dedicated team. Today, that team consists of seventeen professionals.
