What is hydrogen storage?

When large-scale hydrogen production and imports gain momentum, the demand for hydrogen storage will also increase, particularly in industrial regions where hydrogen is widely used. Hydrogen can be stored in depleted gas fields and newly developed salt caverns. Depleted gas fields are underground geological formations from which natural gas has been extracted. Salt caverns are underground cavities created through salt mining.

Underground Hydrogen Storage

In line with the National Agenda for Underground Hydrogen Storage, EBN has been conducting research for several years into the prerequisites and feasibility of underground hydrogen storage, also known as Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS). EBN therefore also participates in the European consortium EUH2STARS. Launched in 2024 with 11 partners from four EU countries, this project is working towards hydrogen storage in a depleted gas field in Austria, as well as similar projects in Hungary and Spain. See also Home | EUH2STARS.

In 2026, EBN is also contributing to the feasibility study for hydrogen storage in the depleted Q16-Maas gas field, located just off the Port of Rotterdam, together with ONE-Dyas, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Shell. This study is supported through the TSE Industry Studies: Hydrogen and Green Chemistry subsidy scheme. For more information, please visit this page.
