The role of natural gas in the energy transition
The Netherlands is actively transitioning towards a climate-neutral energy system by 2050. Natural gas remains an important energy source during this transition phase. EBN is committed to connecting the energy transition with energy security.
Natural gas still accounts for approximately 36% of energy consumption in the Netherlands. We use natural gas to heat homes and offices, but also as a feedstock for industry. In addition, natural gas plays an important role in electricity generation when wind and solar energy are not available.

Natural gas and the energy transition
As the public energy company of and for the Netherlands, EBN uses its natural gas activities to contribute to two transition goals:
- Safeguarding energy security
- Making the gas system more sustainable
Energy security and the energy transition
The energy transition makes us increasingly aware of the importance of energy security. Natural gas plays a role during peak demand periods and serves as a flexible backup when solar and wind generation is low. By combining domestic production, imports and storage, energy security can be maintained throughout the transition. EBN actively participates in gas storage facilities such as Bergermeer, PGI Alkmaar, Norg and Grijpskerk, and acts as a filling agent when the market falls short.
Making natural gas production more sustainable
EBN aims to be able to supply climate-neutral gas after 2040 as part of its sustainability strategy. In the meantime, natural gas production itself is being gradually phased down, with a strong focus on the safer and more efficient use of existing infrastructure.
