Aramis

The Aramis project is an important part of the wider Aramis initiative. The project concerns large-scale CO₂ transport infrastructure from the Rotterdam port area, enabling storage in initially three storage fields beneath the North Sea. EBN and Gasunie are jointly responsible for developing this infrastructure.

The project plays a crucial role in reducing industrial emissions and helping the Netherlands meet its climate targets. It also contributes to the long-term resilience of industries that are more difficult to decarbonise. The Netherlands has an excellent starting position for CO₂ storage because of its location on the North Sea and the presence of many depleted gas fields beneath the seabed. Aramis has sufficient capacity to accommodate not only CO₂ volumes from Dutch industry, but also volumes from neighbouring countries such as Germany, Belgium and France.

Both industries that capture CO₂ and operators that store CO₂ can connect to the Aramis infrastructure. The Aramis infrastructure includes a CO₂ collection point shared with Porthos, a compressor station, a 200-kilometre pipeline and an offshore CO₂ distribution platform. Onshore, this infrastructure connects to the Porthos onshore pipeline and the CO₂next terminal with storage tanks. At the collection point, the CO₂ is brought to the right temperature and pressure for further transport to the storage fields via the subsea Aramis pipeline. In the storage fields, the CO₂ is stored permanently.

The final investment decision (FID) for Aramis is expected to be taken in 2027, after which the Aramis project can start up in 2030. The pipeline has a capacity of 22 megatonnes.
