Metropolitan Region Amsterdam South (Greenport Aalsmeer)

To develop geothermal energy in the Southern part of the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam (MRA) Gaia Energy and EBN are working together.

In September 2025, the partners signed a cooperation agreement covering five geothermal energy licences in the area. MRA South includes Greenport Aalsmeer, one of the Netherlands’ largest greenhouse horticulture clusters and the international trading centre for flowers and ornamental plants.

The MRA South area faces a major decarbonisation challenge. Its heat demand is comparable to that of the existing district heating in Amsterdam and Almere. Geothermal energy can make an important contribution to a reliable and sustainable heat supply for the region.
