Aardwarmte Regio Amsterdam
Through Aardwarmte Regio Amsterdam, Vattenfall, the Municipality of Amsterdam and Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) aim to develop geothermal energy in the Amsterdam region. The heat produced will be supplied to homes and buildings through existing district heating networks.
The subsurface in the Amsterdam region appears to be suitable for geothermal energy production. This was indicated by the exploratory drilling activities carried out in the region in 2023 as part of the SCAN programme. From September to December 2025, large-scale 3D seismic surveys were also conducted across nine municipalities, including Amsterdam.
Based on the findings of these studies, we are assessing where a geothermal production site could be developed. To this end, the parties involved, including Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), are currently carrying out feasibility assessments to determine whether geothermal wells can be successfully realised.
