Properbase Work Package C: Upscaling Guideline and Well Test Protocol

New guidelines for improved prediction of geothermal reservoir properties

The Dutch geothermal sector aims to scale up significantly towards 2050. This development focuses in part on deeper reservoirs, for which the availability of reliable subsurface data is limited. The TKI project Properbase aimed to improve the predictability of reservoir properties in Dutch geothermal systems and to reduce uncertainties. Within this project, EBN and IF Technology have developed two practical deliverables.

The upscaling guideline provides guidance for consistently translating core, log and well test data into input parameters for geomodels widely used in the Netherlands, such as DoubletCalc and SRIMA. The guideline describes how flow, thermal and geomechanical properties can be measured, scaled up and calibrated in a robust way, including overviews, practical tips, and explicit attention to uncertainties and application limits.

The well test protocol focuses on improving both the quality and the cost-effectiveness of well tests in geothermal projects. The document shows how well-designed and properly executed well tests, in combination with logging and core analysis, provide crucial information about the reservoir at a larger scale than just the well vicinity. In addition, the protocol offers guidance for optimizing measurement programmes, limiting assumptions, and enabling better calibration between datasets.
