System development in the public interest

The complexity and scale of the energy transition require a broadly supported vision for the energy system of the future, as well as a clear understanding of the key steps needed to achieve it. Many stakeholders, including the Dutch government, are working towards this goal. EBN contributes from the perspective of the public interest through research, advice, innovation guidance and strategic partnerships across a wide range of areas. Together, we can accelerate the development of a sustainable and integrated energy system.

The goal is clear: well before 2050, CO2 emissions from the Dutch energy system must be reduced to almost zero. Achieving that goal will require significant effort from both public and private stakeholders, across land, sea and the subsurface.

To make the right decisions, a clear overview and a deep understanding of the energy system are essential. Through EBN’s Energy Systems development unit, we work with a wide range of partners to help build a broadly supported vision of the future energy system. We analyse scenarios and contribute to topics such as energy storage, security of supply and the optimal use of existing infrastructure and assets. Our insights help ensure coherence and impact across EBN’s own activities, while also supporting ministries, provincial authorities, municipalities and other societal partners.

When you understand what is happening across different regions and sectors, you can connect public and private organisations more effectively. This enables them to share knowledge, combine expertise and strengthen one another. The result is a more integrated energy system and a faster transition.

As a public company, EBN always acts with the public interest in mind. We actively identify opportunities to save time and reduce costs. For example, we encourage the reuse of existing wells, offshore platforms and pipelines wherever possible. We also support the development and deployment of promising innovations to help bring them to market more quickly.

In addition, we promote collaboration between relevant stakeholders and encourage the alignment of comparable projects. Increasingly, this is done in close consultation and cooperation with local communities and the wider environment in which projects take place.

By working together, we can reach our shared goal more quickly: an integrated energy system that provides everyone in the Netherlands with sustainable, reliable and affordable energy.
