Building a sustainable energy system together, faster
As the Dutch state energy company, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) is actively committed to achieving a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supply for citizens and businesses in the Netherlands. With the goal: a climate-neutral energy system by 2050. Find out how we aim to achieve this.
In the 2015 Paris Agreement, 195 countries, including the Netherlands, agreed to limit the rise in the average global temperature to well below 2°C, if not 1.5°C, by 2050. To achieve this, the focus is on reducing CO2 emissions.
The Dutch government has set a target for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Netherlands: 55 to 60% lower emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels and a carbon-neutral energy system by 2050. GHG emissions need to be 95% lower in 2050 than they were in 1990, a target that was subsequently laid down in the Dutch Climate Agreement and in the Dutch Climate Act.
To reduce CO2 emissions, we need to burn fewer fossil fuels. Production processes need to be cleaner and more efficient. And it is vital to increase our generation of renewable energy, such as green electricity and geothermal heat.
The ambition of the Dutch climate policy is to be completely climate neutral by 2050. EBN, as a public energy company wholly owned by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, contributes to the Dutch climate policy’s goals. The policy combines energy security and sustainability. We are committed to a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy supply for the Netherlands, today and in the future. We are working on the creation of a sustainable energy system that is necessary to achieve the climate goals.
We do this by working on:

The development of a sustainable and accessible energy system for all.

The transition of our gas system; after 2040 we want to be able to sell gases in a climate-neutral way. EBN is also involved in the electrification of drilling rigs, reuse of infrastructure and exploration of the development of sustainable gases.
- A sustainable heat transition; we work on the large-scale extraction of geothermal energy in various projects and the development of collective heat systems.
- And responsible CO2 storage; we are working on the realisation of a CO2 transport and storage system under the North Sea.
We work closely with public and private partners and use our knowledge, expertise and financial rigour to accelerate the construction of a sustainable energy system. This is necessary in order to meet the climate goals. Energy, today and tomorrow, must be affordable and reliably available to everyone. This means that security of supply and sustainability must and can go hand in hand. That also determines EBN’s focus: accelerating our sustainability task and ensuring energy security for everyone. This requires direction from the public interest and good cooperation between government, companies and civil society organisations.
Het goede gesprek op basis van de juiste feiten en cijfers
De kennis die wij hebben van onze specifieke vakgebieden, van de markt, van de techniek maar ook van het energiesysteem en de bijbehorende feiten en cijfers, heeft unieke waarde. Om deel te nemen in projecten en zo de (financiële) slagkracht daarvan te vergroten. Maar ook om bij te dragen aan een goed gesprek op basis van de juiste, objectieve feiten. In een omgeving die wordt gekenmerkt door complexe veranderingen en informatiestromen en in een wereld waarin polarisatie en ‘verbubbeling’ toenemen, is een publieke organisatie die de objectieve werkelijkheid uitdraagt belangrijker dan ooit.
Wij willen de kennis en bewustwording rond energie en het energiesysteem vergroten. Bij verschillende doelgroepen, op verschillende kennisniveaus. De politiek, het bedrijfsleven en het publiek discussiëren al volop over de energietransitie. Wij zien het niet alleen als onze taak om die dialoog te stimuleren, maar willen er vooral voor zorgen dat hij geïnformeerd gevoerd wordt. Op basis van feiten. Dat doen we nu al op allerlei manieren. Denk aan het jaarlijkse energieontbijt, de infographic Energie in Nederland, met onze Transition Talks en ‘weken van ….’. Maar ook door partners te faciliteren met kennis, publicaties, onderzoeken en rapporten en met onze bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling en educatie op scholen.
