Presentations ESP Workshop

There is a growing need among Dutch geothermal operators for more insight and practical tools to extend the lifespan of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs) and reduce the associated costs. To address this, EBN and Geothermie Nederland organized this workshop with presentations on ESPs in geothermal applications deeper than 500 meters. During the interactive program, experts from the Netherlands and Germany shared practical experiences, challenges, and solutions. The workshop targeted a technical audience of engineers from operators and contractors and other ESP specialists.

• Joost Haverman (Ennatuurlijk Aardwarmte) provides an introduction to the use of ESPs specifically in the geothermal sector. He shares technical insights and experiences and addresses the specific challenges related to ESPs in geothermal projects.

• Pejman Shoeibi Omrani (TNO) discusses R&D trends in ESPs and the important role of data. He provides an overview of ESP as the most commonly used artificial lift method and highlights current shortcomings (such as lifetime, monitoring, and costs). The presentation includes updates from the German ANtLiA project that focusses on data collection to improve geothermal projects.

• Max Bilfinger (Oildynamics) examines failure mechanisms and technological evolution of ESPs in geothermal applications. He analyzes the lifecycle of an ESP, from early failures to wear-out. The presentation also covers technological developments addressing corrosion, erosion, high temperatures, and efficiency improvements.

• Matthias Möller (GeoTKP) shows how to prevent subsequent damage caused by dynamic effects in an ESP production string. He provides insights into dynamic loads in production strings, the risks of deformation and damage, and offers practical design tips to avoid vibration-related issues.
