Determination of Seal Stresses for Geothermal Applications in The Netherlands: Methodology and Model

As part of the SCAN wells geomechanical data program (Janszen et al., GET 2024), extensive logging, coring, and testing were carried out. This presentation highlights the determination of in-situ minimum stress in seals, based on results from the first five wells at multiple depths.

These findings are added to the post-drill 1-D models to enable extrapolation to other geothermal projects. The insights help to ensure safe drilling, prevent out-of-zone injection and provide input to seismic hazard analyses.

Additional to the previous presentation (Hettema et al., GET 2025) this presentation shows two independent methods to quantify the maximum horizonal stress.
